Entry 1_ Lê Thị Linh
(identification of messages and rhetorical devices).

Item 1:  Song.
                                      Until you.

Baby life was good to me
But you just made it better
I love the way you stand by me
Throught any kind of weather
I don't wanna run away
Just wanna make your day
When you feel the world is on your shoulders
Don't wanna make it worse
Just wanna make us work
Baby tell me i will do whatever
[Chorus]
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby nobody, nobody,until you
Baby it just took one hit of you now I'm addicted
You never know what's missing
Till you get everything you need, yeah
I don't wanna run away
Just wanna make your day
When you feel the world is on your shoulders
Don't wanna make it worse
Just wanna make us work
Baby tell me,I'll do whatever
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby,nobody,nobod y until you
See it was enough to know
If I ever let you go
I would be no one
Cos I never thought I'd feel
All the things you made me feel
Wasn't looking for someone until you

It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby nobody, nobody,until you.

Rhetorical devices:
-         Repetition: It feels like nobody ever; nobody; until you;
-         Rhyme: ▪ End-rhyme: (line 5 – 6): away – day; (line 18 – 19): worse-work; better-weather-shouders- whatever.
-         Hyperbole:  ● When you feel the world is on your shoulders
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Message:  the song reflects the merry mood of a man who has been gone with his first love. In this song, the man seems to be very honest, and is consciously attempting to open his heart to the dear woman. In fact, he wants to express his intense and deep love to keep his lover being with him.

Item 2:    the story : “ the Ant and the Grasshopper”.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about,
chirping and singing to its heart's content.  An Ant passed by,bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the
nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper,
"instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant,
"and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have got
plenty of food at present."  But the Ant went on its way and
continued its toil.  When the winter came the Grasshopper had no
food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants
distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had
collected in the summer.  Then the Grasshopper knew:
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

Rhetorical devices:
-         Consonance: “ food and found itself dying of hunger”.
-         Repetition: “why...me”- said the Grasshopper… “instead…way”.
                        “why…winter?”-said the Grasshopper.. “we….present”.
-         parallelism: “ a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content”.

Message:   This story lelf the readers a very useful moral: in this life, nothing is ready for anyone, so we must have a look towards the future to find the difficulties and try to tackle. In addition, we cannot live on other people for good but have to live on ourselves.

Item 3:   A cartoon

Bows and arrows are SO 20th century! by Fran

Rhetorical devices:
-         metaphor: “ Bows and Arrows are so 20th century!” ( it is no longer used nowaday)
-         symbol: a bow and a gun: they stand for the two period of time.

Message:
We can realise from this picture that women must not be oppressed by men, and women have right to be treat equally, they are absolutely powerful to struggle for their freedom.

  1. Item 1:
    This song is so romantic!
    Item 2:
    I agree with you!
    Item 3:
I have some ideas of the massage. You can see in this cartoon there are two persons and I think they have same sex, so it cannot express the equality of man and woman. The sentense under the cartoon " Bows and arrows are so 20th century!" makes me think about wars and modern weapons in the 21th century. Therefore, I guess this cartoon is about the progressive of weapon between two centuries.

  2. L, I'm afraid that I agree with Hanh about item 3:)), however I want to add my idea: The cartoon also shows the development of the people generally ( Because you can see the way you swear):). About item 1, I am not good at something too emotional, so nothing to comment. About item 2, I agree with you.

  3. I don't agree with your message on the third item:
As i see, in the picture, both people are men. so
I think the message is in the 21th century, nations which invest in developing high technology and equipment will have a better chance to become the winner and dominator in the world than other nations whose techology is underdeveloped.
    I based on these signals:

the face expression show that: The man with the arrow - an old- fashioned weapon,is the loser, and the other man with a gun- a mordern weapon is the winner.
    two men symbolize nations.
    two weapons symbolize technology.

  4. I agree with Ha Thi Thu Truong at the issue she pointed out, and I think it could be more meaningful if we focus on the opposition between the symbol of peace and freedom (the wings) and the weapons, the contrast colors of the two glasses. Why does the man with dark glasses and modern gun also have wings which seem to exclusively symbolize for peace? The answer, I think, is the message of the cartoon.
