Item 1: Stanzas
from the song Paradise by Coldplay
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so
She ran away in her sleep
and dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise
Every time she closed her eyes
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
and the bullets catch in her teeth
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear, a waterfall
In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly
and dreams of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so
She ran away in her sleep
and dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise
Every time she closed her eyes
When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
and the bullets catch in her teeth
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear, a waterfall
In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly
and dreams of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Rhetorical devices:
-
Repetition: “When she was just a girl/ She expected the
world/ But it flew away from her reach”, “and dreamed of”, “paradise”, “In the
night the stormy night”
-
Assonance: “reach”-“sleep”
-
Alliteration: “But it flew away from her
reach”, “Life goes on, it gets so heavy”, “The wheel break the butterfly”
-
Hyperbole: “Every tear, a waterfall”
-
Metaphor: “Paradise” (a
fantasy), “She expected the world” (she had big dreams), “the bullets catch in
her teeth” (she had to experience disappointment, loss), “The wheel breaks the
butterfly” (the crash between dream and reality), “stormy night” (hard time)
Message:
The song tells the story of a girl being a bit lost in the
world and escaping through fantasy. It also reflects a normal person’s becoming
mature process. As we grow up, we face difficulties so we need to be realistic,
however, we should keep our dreams as inspiration.
Item 2:
The story “A man is dating three women”
Rhetorical devices:
-
Metaphor: “what she does with the money” (their ability
to manage the money or in general, their intelligence)
-
Repetition: “She tells him that … because she loves him
so much.”, “the man was impressed.”
-
Parallelism: “She goes to a fancy beauty salon, gets
her hair done, new make up and buys several new outfits and dresses up very
nicely for the man.”, “She gets him a new set of golf clubs, some new gizmos
for his computer, and some expensive clothes.”
-
Irony: “The man thought for a long time about what each
woman had done with the money, and then he married the one with the largest
breasts.”
Message:
Since the man had to use this test, all of the women must be
quite equal in other determining aspects. He couldn’t make the decision based
on those things so he used the test to challenge them. The thing is, lastly,
all the impression towards the women’s love and intelligence couldn’t prevail
his flavor toward their physical attractiveness. From the beginning, the test
was useless. The lesson, from my perspective, is that this man’s love is firstly
about appearance.
Item 3: A
cartoon
Rhetorical devices:
-
Symbol: “memory card” - a great amount of things which
is hard to remember/ modern technology
Message:
Sometimes the academic exams require more than a normal
student’s memorizing ability or those exams are less focused on checking their real
understanding and skills. The cartoon also can be about the dependence of
nowaday students to modern technology and their brainwork inactiveness

ITEM 1: I was surprised by the ending of story. at the begining, I thought the story would end with the other one. However, the story had a surprising ending which seemed to be unrelated to the above test.It is really funny. Nevertheless, I don't agree with the message you gave completely. In my opinion, the man chose the one with largest breasts because he thinks for his baby in the future, the one with largest breasts will bring up his chidlren better. The message is that we shouldn't only think about immediate impression and should have a wide view and think about the future.

thank you for your comment. yeah it's such an interesting but ironic story . I am really surprised by the way u see it (I mean the thing with rearing children), that may be another positive viewpoint :)
Xóayour work is really interesting and full of meaning, I love them indeed. However, I have an idea about the cartoon:I think people nowaday do everything in the same ways, they are quite stereotyped without being creative anymore. all what they want is how to catch up with the new life.
Trả lờiXóaThank you for your compliment, it's really encouraging :P, and your analysis seems very logical. I like it!!
