Item 1: Statistic
A survey
from US News and World Report on January 29th 2001 showed that the
children abuse rate in Alaska was the highest among other states in the
US, suggesting that Alaskans are terrible parents.
In
fact, every state in the US has its own code of law. Therefore,
different definitions of abuse from different states lead to this
inaccurate statistic. This is a typical example for bias in statistic.
Item 2: Printed Ads
- Stereotype
- Analysis: The slogan 'Success is very demanding' is associated with 'Success is good
fun'. This might leads to the thought that the fun is associated with the beautiful girls shown in the
ad. Therefore, the female characters are
presented as sex symbols. Generally stating, the majority of alcohol
drinkers are men. By including attractive women in such advertisements,
the hidden message is that if men drink a certain type of hard drinks they
will be able to attract a certain type of female.
Item 3:Articles
In an article posted on 04/11/2010 from vnexpress.net with the title: "Thuê bao trả sau vẫn bị nhà mạng hắt hủi", the illustration was a photo of three girls which has no reference to the title or the content of the article.
An other article about Telecommunication called "FPT thông qua nghị quyết mua cổ phần EVN Telecom" also has female appearance as the illustration.
Both
two illustration above use female images and have no relevance to the
content of their articles. The only thing that relevant here may be the
phones the girls holding in the pictures.
The abuse of female images in those two article might suggest gender bias and unfair or unrespectful attitude toward women.

Item 1: I think it may be assumption because just basing on the result from 1000 people which is a small part of the amount of the Alaska's population, the research conclude that Alaskans are terrible parents.
Trả lờiXóaItem 2: as I see that this item should be discrimination instead of stereotype because in the ad, the alcohol is just only for men. Moreover, the slogan of the ad and the image of two women seem to express that women are like funny object which men demand.
Item 3: I agree that the images are irrelevant. However, I don't think they mean irrespective attitude toward women. To me it's simply like: no images to illustrate the content -> make use of images of beautiful girls (holding phones of course)-> eye-catching
Trả lờiXóaHi,
Trả lờiXóaHere are my comments:
About item 1, I agree with Anh. Your analysis is very excellent, only trival mistake is that "bias in statistic" should be called assumption. Because assumption means conclusion based on limited knowledge of the fact. In this research, the author just base on a part of Alaska's population to suggest that Alaskans are terrible parents.
About item 2, the picture make me feel confused between discrimination and stereotype. From my point of veiw, it should be stereotype because discrimination is unfair treatment in action and stereotype is a mental image of a group which in this picture is that women is symbol of sex and entertainment.
About item 3, I think you should find another article, story or video to replace it. The images of the girls in the article are just for advertisement, not actually are discrimination. They are young, fashionable, so they are suitable for mobile phone advertisement.
That's all. Good night!!!^^
