ENTRY 3_ Trần Thị Ánh

ENTRY 3
Indentifying Bias

ITEM1: indentifying visual bias
- Discrimination
- Analysis: In the poster of Vinolia Soap, a white girl criticizes a black boy that he is dirty because he does not wash himself with Vinolia Soap. The poster is unsuccessful and criticized strongly by public, especially black people, because the black think that there is a discrimination here and they seem to be offended.

ITEM 2: indentifying research

- Analysis: In research, look at the percentage of Vietnam Gallup institute gave, there is a problem here. The problem is that the percentage of the people who do not know or refuse to answer the question in the survey is large ( 35% ). Therefore, the conclusion of Gallup institute is not convincing enough because their conclusion just based on the percentage of people whose answer is “ YES ”.They seemed to ignore this figure, or even 35% of the people may be considered as the percentage of the people whose answer is “ NO ”.

ITEM 3: indentifying article

Analysis:  The title of the article “ cứu sống bé trai rớt xuống giếng nhờ iphone” made readers confusing. The title expressed as if the iphone is the main factor which saved the boy. However, in fact the boy was saved thanks to hard effort of the rescue workers who used the iphone as camera. It means that the iphone is just a device to help the rescue workers save the boy more easily.

3 nhận xét:

  1. For item 2 and 3, you should clearly name what kind of bias your items are, instead of just analyzing them.
In item 2. I think there is no kind of bias here. The article just says the true statistics collected. We have to respect the answers of informants, and certainly we have no right to force them to state "YES" or "NO" clearly. They can leave it blank, that's normal. It will take much time to look for a survey with all questionnaires totally fulfilled, and a large number of researches come to conclusion despite this lack.

  2. Dear my friend,
In my opinion, there are some problem in your items.
In the first item, I don't think that it is discrimination at all. The girl think that the black boy is dirty; and his black skin is the results of not using the Vinolia Soap. There are not any discrimination in this poster because the discrimination is "treating people in a less favorable way because they are members of a particular group (prejudice in action)".
I think the bias in this poster is assumption because the girl concludes that the boy is dirty just because he has the black skin; but the fact that he is a black boy. Therefore, the girl make a conclusion based on her limited knowledge of the facts.
    Sincerely,
    Hanh Cao

  3. I really like the second item in your entry. The way the press concesl the truth behind unconvincing statistics make the readers being unaware of the fact that the press freedom in a Vietnam is not free at all.
In the 3rd item, the article bring the story up like a rare and special circumstance. However, the iphone was inly used to help the workers find the position to pull the boy up. The title of the article is catchy, but irrelevant.
